This is not simply a collection of famous destinations — it is a journey along the Silk Road itself.

Starting in Xi’an, the ancient capital at the eastern end of the Silk Road, the route gradually moves west through the Hexi Corridor, Dunhuang and the desert oases of Xinjiang, following the historic path that once connected China with Central Asia.

What makes this journey special is the way history, landscapes and local life unfold together. You will see imperial treasures and ancient Buddhist art, but also visit local homes, experience traditional crafts, watch shadow puppetry, explore morning markets and discover how people have lived along this challenging route for centuries.

The scenery changes dramatically as you travel west — from ancient city walls and loess landscapes to Qilian snow mountains, rainbow-colored cliffs, vast Gobi deserts, desert oases and the mountains of Xinjiang.

Most importantly, the itinerary is designed to experience the Silk Road rather than simply visit its landmarks. Each destination adds another chapter to the story, creating a deeper understanding of how trade, religion, art and cultures traveled across China and beyond.

Day 1 | Arrival in Xi’an

Arrive in Xi’an by flight or high-speed train. Your private guide and driver will meet you and transfer you to your downtown hotel.

After check-in, enjoy some free time to settle in.

Optional Self-Explore: Visit the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, an iconic Tang Dynasty landmark once closely connected with the translation and transmission of Buddhist scriptures along the Silk Road. Continue to Datang Everbright City, where Tang-style architecture, cultural performances and illuminated streets bring the atmosphere of ancient Chang’an to life after dark.

Day 2 | Xi’an | Qin Empire & Local Life

Today discover Xi’an through both its imperial history and local traditions.

Visit the world-famous Terracotta Warriors, with audio-guide service included, and marvel at the underground army created more than 2,000 years ago to protect China's first emperor.

Continue to a traditional Yaodong cave dwelling for a local family visit and a glimpse into the unique cave-home lifestyle of Northwest China.

At a terracotta reproduction workshop, try your hand at making a small Terracotta Warrior replica, turning one of China's most famous archaeological discoveries into a hands-on cultural experience.

Later, explore the lively Muslim Quarter, known for its traditional food, local shops and vibrant street atmosphere.

Optional Evening Experience: Tang Dynasty music and dance performance with an imperial-style banquet.

Day 3 | Xi’an | Ancient City & Traditional Culture

Spend a full day discovering the historic heart of Xi’an.

Begin at Shuyuanmen Cultural Street, a traditional area known for calligraphy, painting, handicrafts and old-style architecture.

Continue to the Xi’an City Wall and enjoy a cycling experience along one of the best-preserved ancient city walls in China.

Visit Gao Family Mansion, a historic courtyard residence where you can watch a traditional Chinese shadow-puppet performance.

End the day around the Bell and Drum Tower Square, one of the most recognizable areas of historic Xi’an.

Day 4 | Xi’an → Zhangye | A Scenic High-Speed Rail Journey

Start the morning with a glimpse of everyday Xi’an life at a traditional morning market.

Then board the high-speed train from Xi’an North to Zhangye West, approximately 6.5 hours.

Rather than simply being a transfer, the train journey itself becomes part of the experience. As the landscape changes from the loess hills and terraced slopes of central China to mountain valleys, villages, the snow-capped Qilian Mountains and the wide grasslands around Shandan Horse Ranch, you can watch the scenery gradually transform along the ancient Silk Road corridor.

A packed lunch with sandwiches or local roujiamo, snacks, fruit and bottled water will be prepared for the journey.

Upon arrival in Zhangye, meet your driver and transfer to the hotel.

Day 5 | Zhangye | Buddhist Heritage & Rainbow Mountains

Today combines ancient Buddhist heritage with one of the most spectacular geological landscapes in Northwest China.

In the morning, visit Mati Temple Grottoes, a remarkable Buddhist complex carved into the cliffs of the Qilian Mountains. The highlight is the dramatic Thirty-Three Heavens Grotto, where ancient religious art meets extraordinary mountain scenery.

In the afternoon, visit Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park, famous for its vividly layered red, orange, yellow and ochre-colored mountains.

Stay into the late afternoon to enjoy the changing colors of the landscape as the sun begins to set.

Day 6 | Zhangye → Jiayuguan | The Western Frontier of the Great Wall

Drive approximately 2.5 hours from Zhangye to Jiayuguan.

Begin at the First Beacon Tower of the Great Wall, dramatically positioned above the Jiayuguan Canyon. Standing at the westernmost end of the Ming-era Great Wall, it offers a powerful sense of China's ancient frontier and the vast Gobi landscape beyond.

In the afternoon, explore Jiayuguan Pass, one of the most important gateways along the ancient Silk Road. Visit the Great Wall Museum and experience the history of travelers and traders passing through this strategic frontier.

Optional Cultural Experience: A Silk Road-inspired procession such as All Nations Paying Tribute or a Western Regions Princess Procession, with the opportunity to receive a commemorative Silk Road Travel Document.

Day 7 | Jiayuguan → Dunhuang | Into the Desert Oasis

Travel approximately 5 hours from Jiayuguan to Dunhuang.

In the afternoon, experience the spectacular Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake, where golden desert dunes surround a natural oasis that has survived for centuries.

The contrast between the vast desert and the tranquil crescent-shaped lake creates one of the most memorable landscapes of the Silk Road.

Optional Experiences: Camel riding and sand sliding.

In the evening, explore Shazhou Night Market at leisure, sampling local Northwest cuisine, browsing Dunhuang handicrafts and enjoying the atmospheric Tang-style architecture and night scenery.

Day 8 | Dunhuang | Ancient Frontier & Gobi Wilderness

Today venture deep into the Gobi Desert and discover the remote frontier of the ancient Silk Road.

Travel from Dunhuang to Yumen Pass, an important Han Dynasty military gateway and one of the most evocative symbols of China's western frontier.

Continue to Yadan National Geological Park, where thousands of years of wind erosion have created an extraordinary landscape of sculpted rock formations across the vast desert.

The immense scale and isolation of the Gobi make this one of the most dramatic natural experiences of the journey.

Optional Evening Experience: The Music of Dunhuang performance with a regional specialty dinner.

Day 9 | Dunhuang → Liuyuan → Turpan | From Desert to Oasis

Begin the morning with a visit to the Mogao Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world's greatest collections of Buddhist murals and sculptures.

The visit includes the digital cinema experience, spherical-screen film, shuttle transportation and access to at least eight physical caves, subject to the site's operating arrangements.

Important: Mogao Cave tickets must be reserved well in advance, with reservations normally opening approximately 30 days ahead.

After the visit, transfer approximately 2 hours by road to Liuyuan South Railway Station.

Board the high-speed train to Turpan North, approximately 3.5 hours.

Upon arrival, meet your driver and transfer to your hotel.

Day 10 | Turpan | Ancient Oasis Civilization & Uyghur Culture

Discover Turpan, an ancient oasis civilization shaped by the Silk Road.

Visit Jiaohe Ancient City, one of the world's largest and best-preserved earthen archaeological cities and once an important administrative center during the Tang Dynasty.

Explore the ingenious Karez Irrigation System, an underground network that brought precious mountain water to the desert oasis and made agriculture and settlement possible.

Continue to Sugong Pagoda, an elegant Islamic minaret dating from the 18th century, known for its intricate brick decoration.

Later, visit Grape Valley, famous for its vineyards and oasis agriculture, followed by a Uyghur family visit for a more personal introduction to local traditions, hospitality and everyday life.

Day 11 | Turpan → Urumqi | Flaming Mountains & Uyghur Bazaar

Travel approximately 3.5 hours from Turpan to Urumqi.

Before leaving the Turpan area, visit the dramatic Flaming Mountains, famous for their intense red sandstone ridges rising from the desert.

Continue to Tuyoq Village, an ancient oasis settlement surrounded by barren mountains, where traditional homes, narrow lanes and the original village atmosphere provide a glimpse into historic Silk Road communities.

Upon arrival in Urumqi, explore the lively International Grand Bazaar, filled with dried fruits, spices, carpets, musical instruments and traditional handicrafts.

Day 12 | Urumqi | Heavenly Lake of the Tianshan Mountains

Travel approximately 2 hours from Urumqi to Tianshan Tianchi (Heavenly Lake).

After days of deserts, ancient cities and Silk Road ruins, today's scenery changes dramatically to alpine landscapes.

Enjoy a walk along the lake's wooden boardwalk, admire the surrounding mountains and look toward the snow-capped Bogda Peak.

Continue to Xiao Tianchi and Feilongtan Waterfall before returning to Urumqi.

Day 13 | Departure from Urumqi

Enjoy a relaxed morning at leisure in Urumqi.

Private transfer to the airport for your onward flight.
