Day 1 | Arrival in Xi’an

Arrive in Xi’an by flight or high-speed train. Your private guide and driver will meet you and transfer you to your downtown hotel.

After check-in, enjoy some time at leisure to recover from your journey.

Optional Self-Explore: Visit the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, an iconic Tang Dynasty landmark associated with the spread of Buddhism and Silk Road cultural exchange. Continue to Datang Everbright City, where Tang-style architecture, lights and cultural performances create a lively introduction to Xi’an after dark.

Day 2 | Xi’an — Qin Empire & Tang Dynasty Heritage

Today combines Xi’an’s most important historical treasures with hands-on local experiences.

Visit the world-famous Terracotta Warriors, including audio-guide service, and discover the extraordinary underground army created more than 2,000 years ago to protect China’s first emperor.

Continue to a traditional Yaodong cave dwelling for a local family visit and a glimpse into the unique cave-home lifestyle of Northwest China. At a terracotta reproduction workshop, try your hand at making a small Terracotta Warrior replica, offering a fun and memorable connection with Qin history.

In the evening, explore the lively Muslim Quarter, known for its local snacks, traditional shops and vibrant street atmosphere.

Optional Evening Experience: Tang Dynasty music and dance performance with a traditional imperial-style banquet.

Day 3 | Xi’an → Lanzhou | Traveling Through the Heart of the Silk Road

Begin the morning with a glimpse of local Xi’an life at a traditional morning market.

Continue to the ancient Xi’an City Wall, with an optional cycling experience along the historic fortifications. Later, visit Yongxingfang, a cultural area showcasing traditional Shaanxi food, crafts and folk culture, with an opportunity to watch a traditional Chinese shadow-puppet performance.

In the afternoon, board a high-speed train from Xi’an North to Lanzhou West, approximately 3 hours 10 minutes.

A simple dinner box with sandwiches, fruit and bottled water will be prepared for the train journey.

Upon arrival in Lanzhou, meet your driver and transfer to the hotel.

Day 4 | Lanzhou → Wuwei | Along the Ancient Hexi Corridor

After breakfast, explore Lanzhou's famous Yellow River Scenic Line, experiencing the river that has shaped life and civilization across Northwest China for centuries.

Then drive approximately 3 hours to Wuwei, an important historical city along the ancient Hexi Corridor.

In the afternoon, visit Leitai Han Tomb, famous as the discovery site of the celebrated Bronze Galloping Horse, one of China's most recognizable Silk Road-era treasures.

Descend into the archaeological area to see the ancient tomb remains and learn about the Han Dynasty's military and cultural presence along China's western frontier.

Day 5 | Wuwei → Zhangye | Mountains, Frontier Landscapes & Rainbow-Colored Earth

Drive approximately 3 hours from Wuwei to Zhangye, following the northern foothills of the Qilian Mountains.

Along the way, enjoy views of snow-capped peaks, remnants of the Han and Ming-era frontier walls, and the broad landscapes of the Hexi Corridor.

In the afternoon, explore Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park, famous for its spectacular layers of red, orange, yellow and ochre-colored rock.

Stay through the afternoon for the changing colors of the mountains as the sun begins to set.

Day 6 | Zhangye → Jiayuguan | Buddhist Caves & China's Western Frontier

Travel approximately 2.5 hours to Jiayuguan.

In the morning, visit Mati Temple Grottoes, a remarkable Buddhist complex carved into the cliffs of the Qilian Mountains. The highlight is the dramatic Thirty-Three Heavens Grotto, where ancient religious art meets spectacular mountain scenery.

Continue to Jiayuguan and visit the First Beacon Tower of the Great Wall, dramatically positioned above the Jiayuguan Canyon and the Gobi landscape.

This is where the Great Wall and the vast western frontier come together, offering a vivid sense of how the ancient Chinese empire met the Silk Road beyond its borders.

Day 7 | Jiayuguan → Dunhuang | The Gateway to the Silk Road

Begin the day at Jiayuguan Pass, one of the most important military gateways of ancient China. Visit the Great Wall Museum and experience the historic concept of passing through the Silk Road frontier.

Optional Experience: Participate in a traditional Silk Road border-passage ceremony, receive a commemorative travel document, and enjoy a cultural procession inspired by the ancient western regions.

Continue by road to Dunhuang, approximately 5 hours.

In the evening, explore Shazhou Night Market at leisure, where you can sample Northwest Chinese specialties, browse local handicrafts and enjoy the atmospheric night scenery of the historic oasis town.

Day 8 | Dunhuang | Mogao Caves & Desert Oasis

Today is one of the cultural highlights of the entire journey.

Visit the Mogao Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world's greatest collections of Buddhist mural paintings and sculptures.

The visit includes the digital cinema experience, spherical-screen film, shuttle transportation and access to at least eight physical caves, subject to the site's operating arrangements.

In the afternoon, experience a completely different side of Dunhuang at Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake, where golden desert dunes surround a beautiful natural oasis.

Optional Desert Experiences: Camel riding and sand sliding.

Important: Mogao Cave tickets must be reserved in advance, with reservations normally opening approximately 30 days ahead.

Day 9 | Dunhuang | Yumen Pass & Yadan Desert Wilderness

Today venture deep into the Gobi Desert along the ancient Silk Road.

Travel from Dunhuang to Yumen Pass, an important Han Dynasty military gateway and one of the most evocative symbols of China's western frontier.

Continue to Yadan National Geological Park, home to one of the world's most impressive concentrations of wind-eroded landforms. Vast open desert and strange rock formations create an almost otherworldly landscape.

Return to Dunhuang in the evening.

Day 10 | Dunhuang → Turpan | From Gobi Desert to Oasis Civilization

Transfer approximately 2 hours from Dunhuang to Liuyuan, then board a high-speed train from Liuyuan South to Turpan North, approximately 3.5 hours.

Upon arrival, begin discovering the unique oasis culture of Turpan.

Visit Flaming Mountains, where dramatic red sandstone ridges rise from the desert landscape.

Continue to Tuyoq Village, an ancient oasis settlement surrounded by barren mountains. Its traditional homes, narrow lanes and secluded valley setting offer a glimpse into the historic communities that developed along the Silk Road.

Day 11 | Turpan | Ancient Oasis Civilization & Uyghur Culture

Explore the fascinating history of Turpan, one of the most important oasis centers along the ancient Silk Road.

Visit Jiaohe Ancient City, one of the world's largest and best-preserved earthen archaeological cities and once an important administrative center during the Tang Dynasty.

Discover the ingenious Karez Irrigation System, an underground network that brought precious mountain water to the desert oasis and made agriculture and settlement possible.

Continue to Sugong Pagoda, an elegant Islamic minaret dating from the 18th century, known for its intricate brick decoration.

Later, visit Grape Valley, famous for its vineyards and oasis agriculture, followed by a Uyghur family visit for a more personal introduction to local traditions, hospitality and everyday life.

Day 12 | Turpan → Urumqi | From Ancient Oasis to Modern Xinjiang

Drive approximately3.5 hours from Turpan to Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang.

Visit the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region Museum, where archaeological discoveries and cultural collections provide a deeper understanding of the diverse civilizations that flourished along the Silk Road.

Later, explore the lively International Grand Bazaar, one of the best places to experience the commercial and cultural character of modern Xinjiang.

Browse stalls filled with dried fruits, spices, carpets, musical instruments and traditional handicrafts.

Day 13 | Urumqi | Heavenly Lake of the Tianshan Mountains

Travel approximately 2 hours from Urumqi to Tianshan Tianchi (Heavenly Lake).

Surrounded by snow-capped mountains, the alpine lake offers a dramatic change of scenery after the deserts and ancient cities of the Silk Road.

Enjoy a lakeside walk along the wooden boardwalk, with views of Dinghai Shenzhen, the surrounding mountain scenery and the distant Bogda Peak.

Continue to Xiao Tianchi and Feilongtan Waterfall before returning to Urumqi.
